What it costs to send a car by flatbed or car carrier in Malaysia, in town and between states, how it differs from a breakdown tow, and how to get the car there safely.
Prices to send a car by lorry
Market ranges from Malaysian towing and car-carrier price lists (2025–2026):
| Trip | Typical price |
|---|---|
| In town (up to about 40 km) | about RM150–RM250 |
| Up to 50 km | about RM250 per trip |
| Up to 100 km | about RM350 per trip |
| Up to 150 km | about RM450 per trip |
| Interstate | from about RM300–RM800 for nearby states; long routes are priced per km, about RM3–6 |
Market estimates, not CariLori prices. Car carriers advertise from about RM200. A place on a multi-car carrier that already runs your route can cost much less than a flatbed sent just for you, but it takes longer. Operators quote your exact car and route.
Flatbed or car carrier?
- Flatbed (one car): picks up at your door and goes straight to the destination. Fastest, and best for a car that doesn't run, a low car or a new car.
- Car carrier (several cars on a trailer): cheaper per car on long routes, but you wait for a full load and a fixed date.
- Driving it yourself, or a driver service: cheapest for a car that runs, but adds kilometres, tolls and fuel.
Example: KL to Penang
About 353 km on the North–South Expressway. A flatbed priced at RM3–6 per km would be about RM1,050–RM2,100 one way, so ask whether a carrier already heading north can take your car for less. See the KL to Penang moving route for tolls and travel time.
Before the car goes
- Take dated photos of every side of the car and of the dashboard (mileage and fuel).
- Take out valuables, the Touch 'n Go card and anything loose.
- Ask whether the operator's insurance covers damage on the way, and get the price and the pick-up and delivery dates in writing (WhatsApp is fine).
- Never pay a deposit to someone you haven't checked. CariLori never asks you for payment.
To Sabah or Sarawak
Cars travel between the Peninsula and East Malaysia by ship, through a shipping agent at Port Klang or another port. See shipping to Sabah and Sarawak for how it works.

Questions
How much does it cost to send a car by lorry in Malaysia?
About RM150–RM250 in town, around RM250–RM450 for trips up to 150 km, and from about RM300–RM800 between nearby states. Long routes are priced per km (about RM3–6), unless a car carrier already runs the route.
Can I rent a car trailer and tow it myself?
Trailers to tow behind your own car are rarely offered for rent in Malaysia. Most people hire a flatbed or a car carrier with a driver instead.
Is a car carrier cheaper than a flatbed?
Per car, usually yes on long routes, because several cars share the trip. A flatbed costs more but comes when you need it and goes straight to the destination.
