Sending goods or a car between the Peninsula and Sabah or Sarawak

Updated 6 October 2026

How goods and cars usually travel across the South China Sea, what to ask suppliers and how to post one request for the whole trip.

How it usually works

Goods usually go by lorry to a port on the Peninsula, by ship to a port in Sabah or Sarawak, and by lorry again to the destination. Some suppliers handle the whole trip door to door; others handle only one part.

What to ask suppliers

  • Door to door, or port to port only?
  • A shared container or a full container for your goods
  • Packing or wooden crating for fragile items
  • The expected travel time: it depends on sailing schedules
  • Insurance for the sea journey
  • Whether any of your goods need special paperwork

Sending a car

Cars also go by ship. Ask the supplier which documents they need, such as the vehicle registration card, and whether the car is driven onto the ship or travels in a container.

Post one request for the whole trip

Choose the state you're sending from as the starting state, then add Sabah, Sarawak or Labuan as other states, so suppliers covering both sides can see it. Describe the goods, the towns at both ends and when you need them to arrive.
