How a motorcycle is towed

  • On a van, a 4x4 pickup or a small lorry, with a ramp and soft straps on the frame. Some operators let the rider sit in front.
  • Not with hook and chain like a car: ask for a truck that carries the whole bike.
  • Tell the operator the model and engine size, and whether the bike rolls (flat tyre, locked steering, missing key).

Check your insurance first

Many comprehensive motorcycle policies include free towing up to a distance or a ringgit limit. Examples from the insurers' own pages; check your own policy, they change:

  • Takaful Malaysia (online motorcycle plan): free towing up to 30 km for the first breakdown.
  • Allianz (Road Rangers, comprehensive, below 250cc): 50 km, round trip (announced 2021).
  • Zurich (Z-Rider plans): breakdown towing up to 60 km.
  • Etiqa: up to RM50 on the basic comprehensive cover; unlimited towing with its paid rider add-on.
  • P&O: up to RM150.
  • Unlimited towing is usually a paid add-on. Call the insurer's 24-hour line before you book a private tow.

Towed by DBKL?

DBKL's published rates for a motorcycle towed for obstruction in Kuala Lumpur: RM30 to remove it, RM50 a day to keep it, RM20 for clamping, and a compound of up to RM100 depending on the offence. Bring the original grant and the insurance cover note. Call DBKL's towed-vehicle depot (24 hours, 03-4024 4424) to check where your bike is before you go. Other councils set their own rates.

Broken down on a PLUS highway

PLUS describes the free PLUSRonda tow to the nearest toll plaza or R&R for cars (Class 1), so riders shouldn't count on it: call your insurer's 24-hour line or a tow operator. PLUSLine (1800-88-0000) can still send help to where you are.
