Size and what fits

A 3-ton lorry is a 14-ft lorry: the cargo space is about 14 × 6.5–7 × 7–7.5 ft (about 4.2 × 2.0 × 2.1 m) and it carries about 2,500–3,000 kg, depending on the company.

  • Fits: a studio or small apartment, a few pallets, or a big load of furniture and boxes.
  • For a bigger family house, a 5-ton lorry or two trips may be needed. For a single room, a 1-ton lorry is cheaper.

Good to know

  • Driving it yourself? Many 3-ton lorries weigh more than 3,500 kg unladen and need a Class E licence. Check the BTM on the registration card; see self-drive lorry rental.
  • Three crew are usual for a house move.
  • Box lorries are tall: check the height limit of condo car parks and basements before moving day.
