Hiring a crane in Malaysia: what to tell suppliers
Mobile crane or lorry crane, what details suppliers need to choose the right size, and what to check before the lift.
Mobile crane or lorry crane?
A lorry crane is a lorry with a crane on it: it can deliver a load and lift it into place in one trip, for example building materials, cabins or air-conditioning units. A mobile crane is a crane on its own wheels for heavier or higher lifts. Suppliers will suggest the right one once they know the job.
What suppliers need to know
- The weight and size of the heaviest item
- How high and how far the load must go from where the crane can stand
- Site access: gate width, overhead cables, slopes and soft ground
- Photos of the site and the item, if you can share them by WhatsApp
- The date, time and how long the crane is needed
Permits and safety
- If the crane will block a road or walkway, a permit from the local council may be needed. Ask the supplier, who can usually advise or arrange it.
- Ask to see the crane's current certificate of fitness from DOSH (JKKP), and confirm the operator is certified.
- Big or tricky lifts often need a site visit and a lift plan before the day.
Before you agree
- Minimum hire time and what happens if the lift takes longer
- Whether riggers, a signalman and lifting gear are included
- Insurance cover for the lift
