Market estimates, not CariLori prices. Sources differ a lot: a 2024 marketplace guide put mini excavators at about RM270–RM810 a day. One rental company takes about 10% off for a week and 20% off for a month. Most prices leave out the operator, diesel and delivery, so ask for the total.

Operator, diesel and delivery

  • Operator: often extra, about RM150–RM300 a day. Some companies include one; ask.
  • Diesel: usually on you, though some backhoe prices include it. Check the quote.
  • Delivery on a lowloader: from about RM500 for an excavator in the Klang Valley. Marketplace listings charge about RM420–RM1,060 both ways for a mini excavator and about RM1,180–RM2,360 for a 20-ton. See lowloader prices.
  • Working day: usually 8 am–5 pm. Overtime is charged by the hour, about RM80–RM120 an hour for a backhoe.
  • Per hour (sewa excavator per jam): Malaysian rental companies price by the day, not the hour. For a few hours of work, ask for a half-day or a price for the whole job.

Excavator with breaker

To break concrete or rock the excavator needs a breaker (hammer). Marketplace listings in October 2026: a 0.75-ton mini excavator with breaker about RM410–RM650 a day; a 3-ton mini excavator with breaker about RM1,510 a day, against about RM920 for the same machine without one.

Backhoe (JCB) rental prices

Rental company price lists (2026):

BackhoePer dayPer month
Mini backhoeabout RM500about RM7,000
Standard backhoe (JCB 3CX, Case 580)about RM580–RM800about RM9,500
Large backhoe (Case 590, JD410)about RM670about RM17,400

Most backhoes come with an operator for 8 am–5 pm. Whether diesel and delivery beyond about 30 km are included differs by company. In Johor Bahru one listing (2024–2025) was from RM650 a day including diesel and operator.

Bobcat (skid steer) rental prices

Marketplace listings in October 2026: about RM360–RM860 a day and about RM5,000–RM6,500 a month in Selangor; about RM1,300 a day and RM10,300 a month in Johor. Delivery is about RM950–RM1,330 both ways. No rental company publishes a bobcat price list, so ask for quotes.

Which machine for the job?

  • Mini excavator: drains, small trenches, renovation and landscaping where space is tight.
  • Backhoe (JCB): digs and loads with one machine: roadside drains, pipes and small sites.
  • Bobcat (skid steer): moving and levelling soil, sand and debris, and clearing a site.
  • 20-ton excavator (PC200): big earthworks, land clearing, ponds and foundations.

Land clearing and earthworks (upah tolak tanah)

Nobody publishes an hourly digging rate: contractors price the job after seeing the site. For clearing land, a 2026 price guide gives about RM1,000–RM2,500 an acre for light scrub, RM2,500–RM5,000 with thick scrub and small trees, and RM5,000–RM8,000 or more for full clearing with the waste taken away.

Site rules

  • CIDB card: everyone working on a construction site, operators included, must be registered with CIDB (Act 520); working unregistered can mean a fine of up to RM5,000. Ask to see the operator's card.
  • No DOSH certificate for diggers: the 2024 certificate-of-fitness rules count excavators and bulldozers as material-handling machines and leave them out, unlike cranes and lifts.
  • Digging by a road: you may need a permit. In Perak, digging in a road reserve has needed a JKR permit since August 2026. Find underground cables and pipes before you dig.

What to tell suppliers

  • The job (drain, land clearing, foundation, breaking concrete) and its size
  • The site address and how wide the access is
  • How many days
  • With or without an operator, and who supplies diesel
  • Whether you need a breaker, or a lorry to take the soil away
