Shared lorry (lori tumpang) in Malaysia: how it works and what it costs

Updated 16 October 2026

How a shared lorry or part load works in Malaysia, when it saves money, what it costs, and the shared-container option for Sabah and Sarawak.

What is lori tumpang?

Lori tumpang means your goods share space on a lorry that is already going your way, instead of hiring a whole lorry. You usually pay less, but you wait for a lorry on your route, so the dates must be flexible.

When it makes sense

  • A few items or a small load, not a whole house.
  • Your dates are flexible by a few days.
  • Long routes such as KL–Penang or KL–Johor Bahru, where a whole lorry costs the most.
  • Not for urgent, very fragile or very valuable loads.

What it costs

There's no standard price list: shared loads are quoted per job. The saving is small on short trips (one mover's shared load starts at about RM330 against about RM350 for a whole 1-ton lorry nearby) and biggest on long routes, where you don't pay for the lorry's empty trip back.

Sabah and Sarawak: a shared container

Between the Peninsula and Sabah or Sarawak, small loads travel in a shared sea container (LCL): about RM260–RM450 per cubic metre port to port, and around three weeks door to door. See shipping to Sabah and Sarawak.

What to ask

  • The pickup and delivery dates, and how long the goods may wait
  • Who loads and unloads
  • Who is responsible if something is damaged
  • Whether the price is per item, per cubic metre or per trip

Find a shared lorry

Post a request, list your items and say you can share a lorry and your dates are flexible. Suppliers already running your route may offer a lower price. Compare with a whole lorry on the moving routes pages.

Questions

Is lori tumpang cheaper?

Usually, especially on long routes, because you share the cost of the trip. On short trips the saving is small.

How long does a shared lorry take?

It depends on when a lorry runs your route: allow a few days of flexibility. A shared container to Sabah or Sarawak takes around three weeks door to door.
