What it costs to move one sofa, mattress (tilam), wardrobe, fridge or washing machine in Malaysia, which vehicle to book, and how to move each one without damage.

What one big item costs

Malaysian movers don't price a sofa or a fridge on its own: one item is priced as their smallest lorry trip. Published price lists (2024–2026), Klang Valley, within about 20 km:

OptionPrice
1-ton lorry with driver only (you load)about RM150
1-ton lorry + 2 moversabout RM250–RM370 (some packages from about RM230)
Van with driver, in townabout RM20–RM90 by distance, without helpers
Stairs without a liftabout RM20 a floor with a 1-ton lorry
Wrappingabout RM25 an item in shrink wrap, RM50 with bubble wrap and stretch film
Take apart and rebuild a wardrobeabout RM50, or RM150 for one over 4 ft

Which vehicle?

  • Van: one fridge, washing machine or small sofa under about 1.2 m tall, because a van's roof is low.
  • 1-ton lorry: a 3-seater sofa, a queen or king mattress, a wardrobe, or a few items together.
  • Shared lorry: cheaper on a long trip if you can wait for a lorry already going your way. See lori tumpang.
  • Courier parcel: not for big items. Since 14 February 2026 the national post takes parcels up to 30 kg and 150 cm on the longest side, so a sofa, fridge or mattress needs a van or lorry.

Bought it from a shop? Delivery and taking the old one away

  • Store delivery: a big furniture store charges about RM69–RM149 for truck delivery in the Peninsula, by zone; an electrical and furniture chain charges about RM70 for electrical items and RM103 for furniture on orders under RM500, and nothing above that.
  • No lift: stores charge for stairs, for example a flat RM98 for the 3rd to 5th floor at one furniture store, or RM50–RM100 from appliance makers.
  • Taking the old one away: electrical stores usually collect your old fridge or washing machine free when you buy a new one. Furniture stores take old sofas and mattresses for about RM45–RM50 an item, and mattress makers charge about RM150–RM350.
  • Free council pickup: to get rid of an old sofa or mattress without buying anything, many councils collect bulky waste free on set days. See getting rid of old furniture.

How to move each item

  • Fridge: keep it upright. Fridge makers say wait about 2–4 hours before switching it on after a move, the longer time if it travelled on its side. Check your model's manual.
  • Washing machine: put the transit (shipping) bolts back in before the move and keep it upright; take them out again before you use it.
  • Mattress (tilam): two people carry it on its side; one mattress maker says never bend it more than 15°. Wrap it so it stays clean and dry.
  • Wardrobe (almari): empty it, and ask whether it must be taken apart to fit through the doors and the lift.
  • Sofa: measure the doors, corridor and lift first, and ask whether the legs come off.

One item to another state

There's no published price for one item between states: it's quoted by the trip. A shared lorry already going that way is usually the cheapest, or post the item and let suppliers quote. For a whole lorry, see the lorry price calculator.

What to tell suppliers

  • The item, and its size and weight if you know them
  • Pickup and drop-off, the floors, and whether there's a lift
  • Whether it must be taken apart or wrapped
  • The date, and whether you can help to carry
