Chiller or freezer truck? Moving food and perishables safely

Updated 6 October 2026

The difference between chilled and frozen transport, how to keep the cold chain, and what to tell suppliers.

Chilled or frozen?

A chiller truck keeps goods cool but above freezing, for fresh produce, dairy, drinks and some flowers. A freezer truck keeps goods frozen; frozen food is usually kept at about –18°C. Tell suppliers the temperature your goods need, not just "cold".

Keep the cold chain

  • Ask the supplier to cool the truck down before loading.
  • Have the goods ready so loading is quick, and keep the doors closed between drops.
  • Ask for temperature records if your customers or inspectors need them.

What to tell suppliers

  • What the goods are and the temperature they need
  • How much: cartons, pallets or weight
  • Pickup and delivery addresses, delivery time windows and the number of drops
  • Whether you need a halal-only truck that never carries non-halal goods
  • One trip or regular runs

Medicines and vaccines

Some suppliers carry pharmaceutical goods, which may need special handling and records. Say so clearly in the request and check the supplier's experience before you agree.
